I Knew James Adair Before He Got Famous

Many seemed to think that today would produce no surprises of note. However, IM Jack Rudd got lucky against GM Keith Arkell who was let down by a move order slip and crashed sans airbag. He was climbing up the walls before 3pm.

I was also done by 3pm, having produced the following effort entirely unworthy of publication. Incidentally, each day’s annotations will be published in the Championship bulletin, courtesy of the team there. Among today’s games actually worth going through tomorrow are Henderson – Combie and Adair – Bates, both of which looked very tense.

Phil Makepeace (2074) - (2164) George Salimbeni

During my preparation for Mr. Salimbeni last night, as I looked through one Ruy Lopez after another, I decided to be rash. After all, it seems that everyone expects the Spanish Inquisition these days. So, for only the second time ever, I deviated on move 1.

1. d4 Nf6 2. Nf3 e6

Oh. Biscuits. I had been hoping to play through at least a bit of Crouch -
Salimbeni, 4NCL 2009 which continued 2...g6 3. Bg5 Bg7 4. Nbd2 d5 5. e3 O-O 6.Bd3 Nbd7 7.Qe2

3. g3 d5 4. Bg2 Be7 5. O-O O-O 6. b3 Nbd7 7. Bb2 b6 8. Nbd2 Bb7 9. c4 c5 10. e3 Rc8 11. Ne5 Qc7 12. Rc1 dxc4 13. Bxb7 Qxb7 14. Nxd7 Qxd7 15. Nxc4 cxd4 16. Qxd4

Sigh. Yes, that was really it. This is what happens when I play something pertaining to be a proper opening! My heart wasn't really in it and I fully expect Jack to assign me a skull and crossbones in the bulletin. I'm sure George would admit he was more like Jorge Regula today as well. Plenty of time for fireworks yet though.

1/2-1/2

I realise today's post is rather lacklustre so I've left an Easter Egg in the first paragraph. Anyone who spots the theme will become very popular with my co-conspirator on these pages. Not that that's necessarily a good thing, but there you go.

  1. You really should go to sleep; remember that Ynojosa and co. will have their knives out for you over the next few days!

  4. Ahh - I missed that they were all from the same album. I also missed "Let Down", but I got all the others and the Radiohead theme, as you can tell from my earlier comments here and on ECForum! Congrats Ian!

  5. Ding ding ding! Well done Ian (and Eoin). I might make this a regular feature, especially when the chess is dull.
